Frequently Asked Questions
What's a "WISP"?- WISP is short for Wireless Internet Service Provider.
How's it work?
- Our service is similar to DSL/ Cable and Business class T1, with the exception that we get the connection to you via one of our wireless towers. A small wireless router is usually attached to a window or to the outside of the building, and connects to your internal network the same way a DSL/Cable modem would.
Is it secure?
- Yes, and it's actually more secure in terms of encryption than a normal wired connection.
Is it slower?
- No, you can't tell the difference between DSL/Cable and our service.
I had satellite internet service and it always seemed to lag, does your service do the same?
- No, Wi-MAX wireless technology is very different from satellite service, and in short the signal doesn't have to travel nearly as far.
Do you allow VoIP devices on your network?
- Yes, we even optimize our network traffic to make sure voice traffic receives the highest priority.
Can I use my own router?
- Short answer, Yes, we love fellow nerds who like to do their own thing. It must be an 802.11 wireless capable router with PPPoE support that can run in wireless client mode. Atlanta WISP supports an open device network, but cannot support devices it does not provide with the service. Please note that not all servive locations have standard 802.11 wifi frequencies.
